Tumblr Beats WordPress in Blog Count

I have always ignored Tumblr, even the emails I get occasionally that say “CHECK OUT MY TUMBLR at . I normally ignore those too. Seems like spam to me, and see people spamming Tumblr links to often.

People have asked me if I considered moving my WordPress blog to Tumblr, to answer that, No I am not intrested in moving my blog elsewhere. WordPress does what I need, As much as Tumblr has a viral community, I cannot take it to seriously.

It’s pretty, I admit that. It’s flexable, but it is not OpenSource, but that has not stopped many people.

Yesterday I read on Mashable that Tumblr has beat WordPress in Blog count, I was shocked. Of course I researched it more, and all the WordPress Blogs that are hosted elsewhere are not counted in the WordPress count. It still is a shock as Tumblr has only been around sense 2007, WordPress being around sense 2003. That means WordPress doubles Tumblr in age.

Tumblr offers many tools to customize the way you blog, and there is good reason people use Tumblr.

I use Tumblr because of it’s great community. Nothing sucks worst then having a blog and never getting any views because you’re blog is so isolated in the world of the internet.

WordPress is easy to use, WordPress is more flexible than Tumblr, WordPress has more features, you can install WordPress on server’s… WordPress is best.  Wordpress does what I need it to do, no need to switch to Tumblr

I will start by saying I have been blogging almost as long as blogs have been in existence. I am was actually one of the first 250 people to register for the original “Blogger” site created by Pyra Labs and Evan Williams. I used to love “Blogger” and even after it was sold to Google. Even though Google effectively destroyed “Blogger” I was still adamantly stubborn about learning a new blogging platform. Google unfortunately ruined “Blogger” by dumbing it down and putting restrictions that made no sense as well as by changing the simple blogging code for something that became too unnecessarily complicated and unintuitive to be effective. So when I switched to Word Press, and I mean self-hosted open-source wordpress.org (not wordpress.com)  it was like a breath of fresh air. Sure there was a learning curve but after teaching myself some basic PHP I was able to deploy my already robust HTML and CSS skills to unleash a fury of well-thought out, extensible web sites. As a content management system it is just sophisticated enough to have all the functionality one could need and still easy enough to learn that any one with a little extra time and sufficient motivation can master it. I would not consider leaving anything as “open” and “cost-effective as Word Press for something more restrictive. Word Press also has the benefit of a huge amount of users and a community one can look to for support when things are working out like they should. As far as Tumblr goes – I’ll admit I know nothing about it, accept from the few reviews I have read, which leads me to believe it is “dumbed-down” and “restrictive” which was the eventual fate of the original “Blogger”.

I havent used Blogger or Tumblr but I’ve used Word Press. Its easy to use and open enough for their users to do anything with their own site and dont plan on leaving it any time soon since its the only thing hosted on my web host. My new host for my conference site is supposed to have both WP and Tumblr. I’ll try out Tumblr to see how it is. But I’m most likely to keep using wordpress.
