Apple Hardware Updates 2011 Thoughts

My last few blog posts have been about Mac OS X Lion and tricks on Lion. But this blog post has nothing to do with hardware but about the hardware Apple has recently made and my thoughts on them.

These updates consist of change to the Mac Mini, MacBook being disconninued, MacBook Air updates, and the Apple Cinema display updates.

First off the MacBook is no more. Sad for me to see this happen personally and I don’t believe this was the smartest move nor do I see it as a move for us. I believe the MacBook was too good for $999 and they simply could no longer keep it at that price, and boosting it would simply piss people off. The MacBook was a great computer for students and regular users. Even I use the MacBook as my main machine right now and love it. It works for many and I run many tasks and do some video editing on it, and it works great. I have upgraded it a little but for the average user and for a social user it does the trick.

The MacBook is light weight which is great for traveling and powerful enough for a user. I am disapointed to see it lost. Another reason I see it leaving is due to them wanting there line to be completly aluminum, and they simply could not do this for $999. Sad to see the medium leave the line.

The MacBook Air’s price was dropped which was needed sense they removed the MacBook, and was smart on Apple’s part. If there was not a $999 machine for sale it would only hurt Apple that one dollar from a thousand sure sounds better then a thousand.

They also added a thunderbolt port to the MacBook Air which I see them doing to each machine. They also spiked up the specs a bit and added a back lit keyboard, fancy hah?

The Mac Mini dropped in price. The Mac Mini was $599 previously before the aliminum body and is now back to the orginal price, which is nice. It helps with the idea of a budget PC. I believe $699 was pushing it for Apple, and now I wish I would have waited off on my Mini to save a hundred bucks.

Mini’s processor was updated and the standard storeage space is now 500GB which is great to hear, this gives the iMacs a run for its money! They removed the Mini display port and added a Thunderbult port, which is not much of a surprise.

Apple also made a move into the future with the Mac Mini’s and removed the optical drives. I see optical drives slowly disappearing off many devices.

To top it all off they added a Thunderbolt port in the Apple Cinema displays and discontinued the 24″  model. Leaving only one size, the 27″ model available and dropped the price too $999.

I don’t believe everyone has room for a 27″ display and am not sure if that was to wise to discontinue the 24.” I believe that leaves no medium. But dropping the prices was needed and before I get one that price needs to drop a way bit more.

What do you think of Apple’s hardware updates?

apple’s new hardware updates are always intresting this one there are some good points and bad points i think on the new displays with the thunderbolt connection makes the displays have more use as there is a ethernet port usb, firewire and a extra thunderbolt port on the back of the display. With the macbook being discontinued i think apple are going to lose some people as the macbook was the cheapest mac and people tend to get the cheapest product to see what they are like yo use before spending anymore money on better products. the updates on the macbook airs are small as there are only added ports and a few small changes i don’t think people will see this as a huge change as the design has only recently been updated. With the mini mac i think apple have done the wrong thing by removing the disk drive as a lot of software is located on disks and only recently has product been coming on to the app store i think that unless the person using the mac mini has a external cd/dvd drive i think a lot of people will be put off the mac mini. Personally i think that apple has done a great job with the new display and it is good that they are keeping the macbook airs up to date as they did leave them for a long time before updating the design i think that apple need to think about bringing back the macbook and also bringing back the cd/dvd drive on the mac mini.

I agree having the MacBook gone is not cool. I was planning to get one because I liked the power of the MacBook with a good price, but now I have to settle for the Air.
